General Information

Llamas are animals from the Camelids family. The origin of camelids dates from 40 million years. They used to settle in the central plains of North America. By the end of the last Ice Age, camelids had extinguished in North America. Llamas were tamed by the Alto Peru settlers 5,000 years ago, thus becoming one of the oldest species to be tamed in the world. It is estimated that there are nearly 7 million llamas in South America and 200,000 in North America.

Taming llamas is, in general, very easy. Noises and harsh treatment should be avoided. Instead, you should adopt their natural slow moves.

It is also worth mentioning llamas’s docility and their ability to learn fast. They can be useful as pack or companion animals. In some countries, especially in the United States, packing is commonly done by using llamas. Llamas are put a halter and they can pack backpacks, tents and whatever you may need during a long trekking on irregular roads. Male llamas are more resistant because they can survive on very little food and water per day, thus making the journey more relaxing for the trekker. Llamas have a long life. They can live up to twenty years. Pregnancy lasts eleven months and they only have one cria each time. Mothers do not get the cria dried by licking them. Crias dry themselves by standing under the sunlight and with the help of that genetic quality llamas have that makes most births to happen during the morning or at noon, when temperature is high enough to dry.

Physical Data:

-Llamas can live between 15 and 25 years.
