Frequently asked questions about Llamas

Are llamas intelligent?

They are intelligent and easy to tame. After showing them the tasks to be done (such as to walk with a halter on, pack bags on their back or to tow a little cart) a few times, they learn and get easily tamed.

What and how much do they eat?

Llamas are ruminants and their stomach has three parts. They chew the food the same as cows or sheep. They need little amount of proteins due to their efficient digestive system. They can eat almost all grasses.

What are llamas useful for?

They are useful for the following four purposes:
1. Firstly, for their fibre, which is much more valuable than sheep wool.
2. Secondly, to have them as pets. You do not need much space to have this lovely and docile animal.
3. Thirdly, to have them as “Guard” animals. Llamas are guards by natural instinct and they protect sheep from predators (canine family).
4. Fourth, for their meat. The Argentinian morphotype of llama fulfills a double purpose: fibre + meat.

Do llamas spit?

Llama spit means “go away”. They often do this among themselves. They often spit to humans when they feel obliged to tolerate abusive or violent treatment. If they feel threatened, they spit. Before spitting, llamas move their ears backwards. If the “oppressor” continues with this attitude, they spit a mixture of saliva and grass
